Pelvic health concerns are quite common; however, many people do not realize that treatment exists or are uncomfortable discussing the topic. Did you know that as many as 1 in 4 Canadian women (1 in 9 men) struggle with incontinence?

A Pelvic Health Physiotherapist like Melinda has specialized training designed to address bladder and bowel incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, pelvic pain, pelvic girdle problems and painful intercourse.

Among other things, your Physiotherapist can assess whether your pelvic floor muscles are weak (stress incontinence, urge incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse) or tight (chronic pelvic pain, urinary/fecal urgency, urge incontinence, dyspareunia, vaginismus, vulvodynia, pudendal neuralgia, chronic prostatitis).

In order to be precise an internal exam may be necessary, which may be vaginal, rectal, or both. This way, you get real-time feedback about how the pelvic floor is functioning and a personalized treatment plan to address your needs. Some people will need help getting their tight muscles to settle, while others will need to begin strength training. Without an internal exam and a tailored treatment plan the likelihood of success is poor.
